To do this we are going to switch between the installer and a console session. For it to make use of files on the USB drive, the drive needs to be mounted. When the system boots from the USB drive it will be running an installation subset version of Linux. The process take a few minutes and will notify you when it has completed. Click Start and accept the warning that the USB drive will be erased. In the Format Option section set the Create a bootable disk using to ISO and select the Sophos UTM ISO downloaded in step 1.Simply run the exe as an administrator on your system. The executable does not need to be installed. ![]() There are a number of similar utilities available which you should be able to use if you prefer. Rufus is a USB utility that allows you to create bootable USB drives from ISO images, and it is available from. If you have a physical Sophos appliance use the first option, if you are building your own on a virtual machine or PC, use the second option. One for hardware appliances and another for software appliances. There are two options when downloading the ISOs. Download the Sophos UTM ISOĭownload the latest version of the Sophos UTM images from ![]() It is handy for building and rebuilding your home and test equipment but for your serious production hardware please follow the official Sophos recommended method of attaching an external optical drive. Please note that since this is a workaround it is not a supported method by Sophos. This article steps you through the process of preparing and creating your own Sophos UTM bootable USB installation drive. Sophos provide a USB installation option called the Smart Installer for UTM hardware appliances, but this is a special USB drive that emulates a CD, essentially working around the issue. Most current operating systems can be installed from USB (Windows, OSX, Linux, etc) and it is often the preferred method because these OS installers are aware that they are installing from USB. The only problem with this old school method is that Sophos UTM appliances do not ship with optic drives, and this is true for most modern hardware. ![]() I didn't spend any time looking at AMD CPU options, figuring lower compatibility in general (from my VMware and TrueNAS experience) but should I, given the higher performance per $ it usually offers? I don't want to save a buck on the CPU if it ends up costing me more in other ways because of compatibility issues but if there's a comparable and notably cheaper AMD offering that would do the trick I'm certainly open to it.Installing Sophos UTM from a boot CD is straightforward and works well. I was hoping to put it in a small fanless multi NIC box with a quad core mobile (low TDP) Celeron similar to this īut should I look at an i3 (or higher) CPU? Will mobile CPU speeds (usually less than 2GHz) be enough or do I need to look at higher clock speeds? Is it right to prefer 4 cores with no HT over 2core+HT, as I think I read somewhere? This UTM+ "appliance" needs to support 150Mpbs (or more) internet speed and 5-10 concurrent devices using it, as well as be able to support LAN backups that will be shoveling data at Gb LAN speeds (though configured to run at lower scheduling priority than Sophos VM) The Windows VM is for UPS monitoring (vis USB), Unifi Controller (for LAN Access Point management), Remote Network/PC Management (using RDP), and a USB backup drive. Looking to buy the lowest end system (read: lowest cost) capable of hosting a Sophos UTM Home Edition firewall (maybe XG free edition in future) to serve as an Internet Router and LAN gateway, plus a Windows 10 Pro VM connected to a USB drive for backups. ![]()
